Why six figures is rarer than it feels

Social media and dating apps over-represent high earners, so $100k can feel like the norm. In the data it isn't: the typical American man earns about half that. Income also climbs with age, so a $100k requirement cuts much harder for a 27-year-old than for a 45-year-old.

Where you live matters as much as age. In the Bay Area or Washington DC a six-figure salary is common among college graduates. In much of the country it puts a man in the top fifth.

How many of them are single?

Higher earners marry at higher rates, so the single share among them is a little lower. Among men aged 25 to 35, about 1 in 11 is single and makes $100k or more. Add a height requirement of 6′0″ and the share falls to about 1 in 72.
